Shanghai Scottish

North-China Daily New, 19250718, p. 12a.

Heard at tea-time in our printing room a few days ago: “I was passing along Yates Road yesterday,” said one man, “when a ricsha came along in which was a man about to light his pipe. In the act of extracting a match from a full box, some of the others were dislodged, and three or four fell into the roadway. He stopped the ricsha immediately, went back and carefully retrieved the missing matches,” “Ha! One of the Shanghai Scottish,” exclaimed a Sassenach. “Not at all,” rejoined a member of that august body who was present. “If he had been one of the Shanghai Scottish he wouldn’t have been riding in a ricsha.”
